The County Kilkenny venue held its first meeting in 1914, and made history by hosting the first ever televised Irish race meeting in the late 1960s.

The annual highlight is the Thyestes Steeplechase, which is usually held in mid-January. The course is a right-handed, oval shape of around a mile and a half in distance. It's galloping in character, and has an uphill straight which can quite a stamina test on soft and heavy ground. There are six fences to a circuit in the chase course. There are no significant draw stats on the flat.

Aidan O'Brien, John Oxx and Noel Meade are trainers who all perform well here, but prices are usually restrictive. Jockey Johnny Murtagh has excelled at Gowran in recent times and the County Meath native shows a win rate of one in four, and a healthy profit if blindly followed over the past five years.

Favourites perform well here and show a 32% and 36% strike-rate on the flat and jumps respectively. Bumper favourites have been particularly successful in recent years showing a 44% strike-rate and a healthy profit if followed.
Regarding previous course winners, flat horses have an 11.9% strike-rate on their return with that figure slightly higher over jumps at 12.05%.
