Standard de Liège vs. AZ, 1:1

Luke Williams - 9 Dec 2009
Standard Liege still have a small chance of making it to the next round of the Champions League but will need a win over AZ Alkmaar and depend on the result at the other group match. If Standard win while Olympiakos lose to Arsenal, the Belgians will move into second place at the expense of the Greeks. On the other hand, if AZ manage an away win, the Dutch side will play in the Europa League after the winter break and Standard will be left empty-handed. Standard have not been able to impress this season and earned only one point from their last three league games. As such, they are currently in sixth place after competing for the title several years in a row. AZ have not been doing any better. The Dutch champions lost 1-2 to Vitesse on the weekend, which led to the sacking of manager Ronald Koeman. AZ are currently in seventh place in the Dutch Eredivisie. The previous match between these teams, played in Alkmaar late September, ended in a 1-1 draw. AZ had almost secured the win but allowed Traore to equalize in the 90th minute. Standard have both Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez and Eliaquim Mangala suspended for this match, while Dieudonne Mbokani, Arnor Angeli and Steven Dufour are all likely to miss out with injuries. AZ has few injury concerns but are likely without Stijn Schaars and Hector Moreno, who both picked up knocks on the weekend. Standard are favored to win this match and maybe secure a spot in the round of sixteen. REVIEW:
