Sporting Clube de Portugal vs. FC Basel 1893, 2:0

Luke Williams

Both Sporting Lisbon and FC Basel lost their opening match in Champions League Group C, and only a win in their second game keeps hope alive for a spot in the next round. Both sides have done relatively well in their domestic leagues so far. Sporting occupy a shared first position in Portugal, while Basel lead the Swiss league. Sporting will have the better memories from their previous clash with Basel, in last season's UEFA Cup. The Portuguese won 5-0 on aggregate. The home side will probably be without Marco Caneira and Marat Izmailov, as both are injured. More definite is the absence of the also injured Simon Vukcevic. REVIEW: Sporting Lisbon were never really troubled by their Swiss opposition on Wednesday, and earned a 2-0 win over Basel. Leandro Romagnolli opened the score for the Portuguese home side in the second half, albeit with a little help from defender Reto Zanni, who deflected the ball into the goal. The match was decided in the 86th minute. Derlei, despite slipping away, managed to get a shot on goal and goalkeeper Costanzo couldn't avoid a second goal. Sporting are third in this group, behind Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukranians have the same amount of points but a better goal record. Basel are last.
