SV Werder Bremen vs. FC Schalke 04, 0:2

Luke Williams - 12 Dec 2009
Werder Bremen and Schalke both have the chance to move within a point of leaders Bayer Leverkusen when the two sides square off at the Weserstadion on Saturday. Bremen suffered a disappointing 0-0 draw at Köln last week in a missed opportunity to gain on Leverkusen, and they have one win in five league matches, despite not losing any of them. Schalke, meanwhile, sit level on points with Bremen in the standings, and they have won two of three after last week's 2-0 victory over Hertha Berlin. Schalke have also had the best of this head-to-head series recently, losing just once in the club's last 11 meeting in league and cup play. Bremen manager Thomas Schaaf will have a thin squad to work with on Saturday as Christian Vander, Dusko Tosic, Philipp Bargfrede and Marko Futacs are all out with injuries and illnesses. Goalkeeper Tim Wiese, however, will be in the squad after missing last week. Schalke's Felix Magath is without the suspended Marcelo Bordon, and both Christoph Moritz and Vasilios Pliatsikas are out due to injury. Several players, including Jermaine Jones, Christian Pander and Levan Kenia, will also be out of action as they rehab. Both sides have their share of injuries heading into the game, but Schalke would appear to be in better shape fitness wise. They have had the best of Bremen over the last few years, and expect them to grab some points on Saturday. REVIEW:
