SSC Napoli vs. AS Bari, 3:2

Luke Williams - 6 Dec 2009
Napoli would look to take their unbeaten run to eight matches when they host Bari at Stadio San Paolo on Sunday. Napoli, though, haven't won in the league since their 3-2 comeback defeat of Juventus on October 31. They have scored just twice in all competitions since then and one of those goals came against Serie B side Cittadella in the Coppa Italia. Napoli will be bolstered by the return of Ezequiel Lavezzi for tomorrow's Serie A match against Bari. The Argentina forward has recovered from a thigh injury that saw him miss last weekend's 1-1 draw at Parma. Lavezzi is set to partner Marek Hamsik and Fabio Quagliarella in Napoli's attacking line tomorrow. Bari have been the surprise package of the season and much against the odds are now in touch of a European spot. The Galletti are comfortably perched on eighth place in the table with 21 points, just two points off a Europa League berth. Bari's success has been built on their strong defensive coherence. They have conceded just 11 goals in Serie A this campaign and boast the joint best defensive record with Inter in the league. They haven't scored too many goals but they have played intelligent football, maximising their resources. However, Napoli is no easy opposition although they have already defeated some stronger sides and would not be afraid of the home side's quality. Bari will be missing striker Vitalj Kutuzov and defenders Andrea Massiello and Andrea Ranocchia, all sidelined through injury. The hosts will be without defenders Salvatore Aronica and Matteo Contini, both suspended for tomorrow's encounter. REVIEW: Fabio Quagliarella scored twice as Napoli edged Bari to claim the points in a Serie A clash which saw their opponents finish with nine players on the pitch. Napoli twice came from behind before Quagliarella netted with two minutes to go to seal the points. Bari had gone ahead twice in the second half but could not hold out and a miserable day was completed with the dismissals of Alessandro Parisi with 25 minutes to go and Andrea Ranocchia in stoppage time. The hosts began the match the better and had a good chance to make it 1-0 in the 15th minute, when Walter Gargano passed the ball to Christian Maggio, who was clear on goal but his effort was stopped by Jean-François Gillet. Napoli came very close just two minutes before the break after Marek Hamsík turned provider and assisted Fabio Quagliarella, whose shot hit Andrea Ranocchia on the goal-line. The second half began with Bari breaking the deadlock in the 49th minute, when Barretto latched on to a long ball before sending a chip over De Sanctis. Napoli would equalize just five minutes later, after Walter Gargano crossed the ball to the center of the box and Quagliarella headed it towards the far corner where not even a flying Gillet could get to it. But Bari got the lead once again in the 63rd minute, when Edgar Alvarez, with an individual move down the right, moved past one defender before sending in a cross to Barreto, whose header was parried away by De Sanctis but Ranocchia headed home in the rebound. Just two minutes later, the visitors were reduced to ten men after Alessandro Parisi was shown a second yellow card for a foul near the entrance of the box. Napoli equalised for the second time with 72 minutes on the clock as Maggio scored from close range after the chance was set up by Quagliarella. Maggio went close to making it 3-2 but missed from close range after Denis had worked the opening. With five minutes to go Napoli missed another chance to seal the win when Hamsik's shot from 25 yards went just past the post. But with three minutes to go Quagliarella beat Gillet with a deft touch after a fine pass by Ezequiel Lavezzi. There was still time for Ranocchia to pick up a straight red card after a bad foul on Lavezzi as Napoli picked up all three points..
