Since their glory days back in the 1970’s when FC Bayern Munchen won three consecutive Champions League titles they have only been successful once in 2001. Worrying, especially away from home, for this match has been their below par defensive structure. They have every chance this year of re-establishing themselves as Champions League leading contenders. Franck Ribery is the class act to watch out for.
FC Steaua Bucuresti lack the depth to go into the next round. However with one of the best coaches around in Marius Lacatus they can cause the odd upset along the way. On the field they will be looking to their hardened central defender Dorin Goian.
The best that FC Steaua Bucuresti can hope for is a draw with Bayern Munchen being the early favourites to win.
REVIEW:
In a very even contest the home side were unlucky not to have picked up at least a draw in this game. The Romanian side came into the match unbeaten in their last eight league matches in the Romanian League.
The German side were first to show and were well rewarded in as early as the thirteenth minute when a free kick taken by German international Bastian Schweinsteiger found Van Buyten, who in turn a headed the ball into the bottom left corner beyond the reach of Steaua keeper Robinson Zapata.
The second half saw FC Bayern Munchen desperately attempt to increase their lead but at the same time defend desperately as Steaua Bucuresti threw everything at the Germans in an attempt to salvage at least a share of the points.
