Olympique de Marseille vs. Liverpool FC, 1:2

Since 1993 when they beat AC Milan in the Champions League final they have been rather inconsistent to say the least. Third in the French League last season they will have their work cut out to qualify for the next stage. A player to watch out for could be the twenty one year old French international attacking midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa. However his skills are often overshadowed by the inclination to be lazy and reluctant to pass. Liverpool need no introduction to this competition as they are five time winners. They will be buoyed by their Premier League win at the weekend against Manchester United. Star players who could see Liverpool to the semis, at least, again this year are captain Steven Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres. New man striker Robbie Keane, is likely to be the ideal foil for Torres and once he settles could be an important factor. Liverpool have been one of the most consistent Champions League sides over the past few seasons even when they have disappointed in the Premier League. They would be favourites to win, even away from home. REVIEW: In an entertaining game in Marseille the home team Olympique de Marseille scored first in the twenty third minute when skipper Lorik Cana side – footed a shot past Pepe Reina after the Liverpool defence had been caught square. Liverpool responded almost immediately when Steven Gerradrd scored the first of his two goals when his fierce, curling shot from twenty two metres out shot into the net. Six minutes later Liverpool were awarded a penalty when Ryan Babel was tripped in the box by Ronald Zubar. At the second attempt after Dirk Kuyt had crept into the box Steven Gerrard coolly struck the spot kick past Steve Mandanda. Liverpool, another early favourite, picked up three vital away points.
