Liverpool FC vs. PSV Eindhoven, 3:1

Luke Williams

Liverpool have made their best start to the English Premier League for a number of years now and were impressive in their 2-1 win at Marseille two weeks ago. They are still unbeaten in the Premier League and trail Chelsea on goal difference. Manager Rafa Benitez will have key midfielder Javier Mascherano back from a calf injury to face the Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven with no other injury worries. PSV’s flight from Eindhoven Airport on Tuesday morning eventually left two-and-a-hours late. The hold-up was caused when the plane did not take off due to mechanical problems. The PSV party had to wait for a second aircraft and arrived at John Lennon Airport in Liverpool two-and-half-hours later than planned. PSV are without Ibrahim Afellay. The midfielder is suffering from a bruised toe and did not travel with the team to Liverpool. Manager Huub Stevens has taken a twenty-man squad to England. PSV lost their first match two weeks ago 0-3 at home to Atletico Madrid. Liverpool should be in for an easy win and should establish a firm foothold for qualification into the next round of the competition. REVIEW: Liverpool almost guaranteed themselves a passage into the next stages of the Champions League with a more than convincing 3-1 home victory at Anfield against Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven. Steven Gerrard reached a milestone when he scored his one hundredth goal for his club. The Anfield faithful had to wait only four minutes for the first goal. A Gerrard corner found an unmarked Fernando Torres who shot first-time. Dirk Kuyt was on hand to fire home the rebound off Andreas Isaksson. Robbie Keane scored his first for the club since his move from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer. It came after thirty four minutes after Fernando Torres had torn away down the right. His low cross was met by Keane first-time and it nestled in the far bottom corner of the net. The third goal came via a free kick fourteen minutes from time when a fierce shot from twenty two metres out found the back of the net leaving Isaksson with no chance. PSV hit back three minutes later, when substitute Balazs Dzsudzsak crossed from the right. The ball beat Jamie Carragher to allow Koevermans to get to it ahead of Skrtel, and he headed past Jose Reina from 10 metres.
