FC Dynamo Kyiv vs. Arsenal FC, 1:1

Luke Williams - 17 Sep 2008
Arsenal travel to Ukraine to play their first match of the European season at Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday. The Gunners have never won the Champions League, and want this season to change that fact. These two sides met twice before, in the 2003-04 group phase. Dynamo won the first clash 2-1 at home, and look to repeat that performance this time. Dynamo boss Yuri Semin will have to do without the suspended defender Badr El Kaddouri. Arsenal meanwhile are without Samir Nasri as result of an ankle injury, and new signing Mikael Silvestre's thigh problems keep him from making his debut with the London outfit. Arsene Wenger also included 16-year-old Jack Wilshire to form part of the squad that travels to Kyiv. REVIEW: Arsenal needed a late goal from William Gallas to take one point from their visit to Ukraine on Wednesday. Dynamo Kyiv, who reached the semi finals in the 1998-99 edition of this tournament, took the lead as Ismael Bangoura scored from the penalty spot in the 64th minute. The home side enjoyed more ball possession throughout the match and were never inferior to the 2006 finalists. But the Gunners would get their point as Gallas netted the equaliser in the 88th minute after preparing work from Theo Walcott.
