FC Basel 1893 vs. Sporting Clube de Portugal, 0:1

Luke Williams - 9 Dec 2008
FC Basel hope to end their European season on a positive note but the Swiss won't be given any presents by already qualified Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese also beat Basel in their previous encounter on October 1st. At the time, Sporting won 2-0 with goals from Zanni (own goal) and Derlei. Basel are probably without David Abraham, Marcos Gelabert and Ronny Hodel, but Scott Chipperfield could well return from injury. Sporting's Rui Patricio is suspended after picking up a red card against Barcelona, and Pedro Silva remains sidelined with an injury. Abel is doubtful, but Fabio Rochemback and Tonel should make their returns. REVIEW: Sporting Lisbon wrapped up their group phase campaign with a 0-1 win at unimpressive FC Basel in Champions League action on Tuesday. The only goal in Switzerland was scored in the 19th minute. Poor clearance from Francois Marque allowed Marat Izmailov to conquer and send in a cross, which was then well converted by Yannick Djaló. Sporting had already been certain of finishing second in Group C, while Basel will want to forget this European season as fast as possible as the Swiss only earned one point from their six group games.
