Luke Williams - 16 Sep 2008
Swiss champions FC Basel will do very well to make it into the next round. They played well against Portuguese side Vitoria to make it into the group stage and any win will be a bonus. Eren Derdiyok, their Turkish striker would be their main strike force while their up and coming star is likely to be their left-sided midfielder Valentin Stocker who has already made it to the national side. FC Shakhtar Donetsk will be hoping to make it into the next stage for the first time in their history. They have played in the group stages on four previous occasions. One shouldn’t under-estimate the tactical ability of their Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu. The player to watch should be Ukrainian Player of the Year, Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho. The match could end all square, but if anyone were to win it could be FC Shakhtar Donetsk. REVIEW: Ukrainian champions FC Shakhtar Donetsk won this match far more easily than the score suggests. In complete control in the first half FC Shakhtar Donetsk led 2-0 at half time through goals by their two Brazilian midfielders, courtesy of free kicks, Fernandinho and Jadson. FC Shakhtar Donetsk took the foot off the pedal in the second period and just before the final whistle defender David Abraham grabbed the consolation goal.
