Club Atlético de Madrid vs. Villarreal Club de Fútbol, 1:2

Luke Williams

Fresh off back-to-back victories in La Liga, Atlético Madrid look to contine their ascent up the La Liga table on Sunday when they play host to Villarreal. Despite being trounced 3-0 by Porto at home during Tuesday's Champions League encounter, Atlético have won their last two La Liga games by a combined 6-0, including last week's 2-0 win at Xerez. They still sit, however, only three points above the drop zone. Villarreal have won two of their last three matches, including a 3-2 triumph over Getafe last week in which they finished with nine men. Villarreal are up to 11th place after spending much of the early part of the season near the bottom of the table. The big question for Atlético is the fitness of Sergio Agüero, who will face a late fitness test before the match on Sunday, but he is doubtful. Mariano Pernía is set to go for the first time this season after a summer car crash in Argentina. Several other knocks to players could affect the team's performance. For Villarreal, Ángel López is suspended after being sent off against Getafe, but Cani is eligible after having his red card in the match rescinded by the LFP. Ariel Ibagaza is certain to miss out with an injury, and Robert Pirès is a late scratch from the team. It will be interesting to see how Atlético responds if Agüero cannot go. The team was thrashed in the midweek and Villarreal have played well as of late. Look for a close match the whole way. REVIEW:
