Bayer 04 Leverkusen vs. 1. FC Köln, 2:0

Luke Williams - 24 Oct 2008
Bundesliga matchday nine kicks off with the match between third-placed Bayer Leverkusen and ninth-placed 1.FC Köln. Leverkusen, clear favorites to win this match, haven't lost to Köln in more than eleven years. Their most recent meeting, in February 2006, had Bayer win 3-0. Swiss Tranquilo Barnetta continues to be sidelined for Bayer and will once again be replaced with Schwegler. Köln manager Daum will have to make a chance to the team that won its last three games in a row, as Novakovic suffers from back issues and isn't likely to make an appearance. REVIEW: Despite a goalless first hour, Bayer Leverkusen ended up securing a 2-0 victory over 1.FC Köln in Friday's only Bundesliga match. Pressure began to mount on the home side as goals remained missing but Manual Friedrich's header from a Rolfes assist allowed the home side to breathe a sigh of relief. Referee Weiner awarded the hosts with a penalty kick with six minutes left, and Gekas made no mistake from the spot. Bayer move into first place and could in fact remain there for the week if Hamburg and Hoffenheim draw on Sunday.
