Pressure began to mount on the home side as goals remained missing but Manual Friedrich's header from a Rolfes assist allowed the home side to breathe a sigh of relief. Referee Weiner awarded the hosts with a penalty kick with six minutes left, and Gekas made no mistake from the spot. Bayer move into first place and could in fact remain there for the week if Hamburg and Hoffenheim draw on Sunday.
