Arsenal FC vs. Stoke City FC, 2:0

Luke Williams - 5 Dec 2009
Arsenal will look to get back on winning ways as they visit to take on Stoke City on Saturday. The Gunners have endured a turbulent build-up to Saturday's encounter, slipping to disappointing 3-0 defeats to both Chelsea and Manchester City. The setback against the Blues put a major dent in the club's title aspirations, while a frosty midweek clash with City saw them crash out of the Carling Cup at the quarter-final stage. They will be determined to get back to winning ways this weekend, because if they lose again it will be the first time they have lost three Premier League games in succession since April 2007. Arsenal winger Theo Walcott will miss Saturday's, however, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger expects Walcott to be available for Wednesday's Champions League match against Olympiacos. Alex Song is suspended for the showdown at the Emirates Stadium but right-back Bacary Sagna has recovered from his ankle injury. Gael Clichy (back), Abou Diaby (calf) and Nicklas Bendtner (groin) are still missing, as are Johan Djourou (knee), Kieran Gibbs (foot) and Robin van Persie (ankle). Stoke, 1-0 winners when they were last in London at Tottenham, have lost just once in seven premier League games, keeping clean sheets in their last two. Stoke will give a late fitness test to central defender Ryan Shawcross ahead of Saturday's trip to face Arsenal. The 22-year-old has a groin injury that forced him off in last weekend's 0-0 draw at Blackburn, and is considered a major doubt for the trip to the Emirates. Stoke are without midfielder Dean Whitehead, who is suspended. Potters boss Tony Pulis also has four other players - Ricardo Fuller, Robert Huth, Glenn Whelan and Shawcross - all one booking away from a ban. REVIEW: Arsenal leapfrogged Tottenham into third place in the Barclays Premier League with a morale-boosting win over Stoke. Andrey Arshavin, who was by far the Gunners' best player, slotted home from a tight angle in the first half minutes after Cesc Fabregas had missed a penalty on his 250th appearance for the club. After a largely frustrating second half, impressive substitute Aaron Ramsey sealed the win with a cool finish 10 minutes from time. With Robin van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott out injured, Arsene Wenger's options up front were further reduced by the late withdrawal of Eduardo, who was left out with a minor muscular problem. Arshavin spearheaded the Gunners attack in a line-up that included eight changes from the 3-0 defeat at Manchester City in midweek while Fabregas captained the Arsenal side in Wenger's 100th league game in charge. Abdoulaye Faye, Rory Delap and Tuncay Sanli came in for Stoke, who were without Ryan Shawcross after he failed a late fitness test. The Gunners started brightly, however, and Fabregas put Arshavin through one on one with Thomas Sorensen but he came out to block the Russian's shot. Stoke's first meaningful attack came eight minutes in when Manuel Almunia had to come out and punch away one of Delap's trademark long throws. The visitors could not capitalise on their reprieve, Arshavin stealing in on 26 minutes to open the scoring from Fabregas' pass. The lead should have been doubled two minutes later, but Emmanuel Eboue somehow managed to block a goal-bound shot from his skipper after Armand Traore's deflected cross had rebounded off a post. Despite the misfortunate, Eboue was generously applauded by the Arsenal supporters and he partially made amends with a cute through-ball for Arshavin, whose shot was parried to safety by Sorensen. Arshavin then had a shot deflected off Abdoulaye Faye and onto the crossbar. The longer Arsenal failed to extend their lead, the greater the sense of anxiety inside the Emirates. Stoke were offering only a sporadic threat, although when they did venture into the Arsenal half Delap’s long throws were predictably dangerous, with Manuel Almunia unconvincing in his efforts to deal with the aerial bombardment. As the minutes began to accumulate, nerves became apparent within the home crowds, as Arsenal have rarely been able to protect a clean sheet, however, such trepidation was quelled with just over ten minutes to go as burgeoning Welsh starlet Aaron Ramsey doubled his side's advantage. Arshavin this time played the part of creator, with Ramsey neatly finishing after a well thought-out build-up. With the game finished at 2-0, and maximum points in the bag, Arsenal can begin to breathe easier again, as they avoided a mini crisis of form
