Arsenal FC vs. Standard de Liège, 2:0

Luke Williams - 24 Nov 2009
Belgian champions Standard Liege desperately need a good result as they travel to face Arsenal on Tuesday. Arsenal are practically certain of a spot in the next round of the Champions League and the match with Standard could well allow them to secure their ticket. Moreover, Arsenal could use a win in order to recover from Saturday's Premiership defeat at Sunderland. Standard Liege are not doing too well in their domestic league and crashed to a 2-1 defeat by Gent in Saturday's Pro League action. The situation for Standard is simple. The Belgians need a victory in London if they want to keep a realistic chance in this group. When Standard and Arsenal met in Belgium, two months ago, the hosts first took a 2-0 lead but could not avoid that the experienced visitors turned things around for 2-3. Eduardo will likely feature for Arsenal as strikers Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner are out injured. Another option up front is Mexican Carlos Vela. Standard have no notable injury cases to report ahead of this vital game. Arsenal have everything pointing in their favor for a victory at Emirates Stadium. REVIEW: Arsenal beat Standard Liege 2-0 on Tuesday to secure their spot in the Champions League round of sixteen. The opening goal at Emirates Stadium came after 35 minutes when Standard defender Mulemo slipped and allowed Samir Nasri to direct the ball past keeper Bolat. And the Gunners doubled the lead just before the break, as a stunning distance strike from Denilson was insufficiently deflected by Bolar. In the second half, Arsenal were happy to keep the ball on Standard's half without creating many opportunities. That approach failed once, as a Standard break-through had Mohamed Sarr's low show bounce off the post. Standard's Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez was sent off with a direct red card in the 86th minute. While Arsenal get to prepare for their second round tie, Standard defend their third place, and a ticket to the Europa League, on the final match-day.
